After that last post I decided to do a bit of double checking on the totals. Then I took two large index cards, wrote those numbers on them and tacked them up on the cork board above my desk so I could SEE the difference. My hope is they’ll motivate me. LYN = Last Year’s Numbers, TYN=This Year’s Numbers.

This year’s number of words doesn’t include book 6 yet, since I’m in the first Story Pass, or Story Edit, and I plan on taking the manuscript through about 4 of these passes before it gets to the CE. So I’ll still be adding words. I am writing down the total of the manuscript after each pass and when I’m done I’ll add the final number to this year’s number.
What I won’t do is add the number after the copy edit. I want to know how many new words I’m creating, not how many words I’ve tightened or deleted. I’ve got a list of books I want to get done before the end of the year—and they’re all part of Zoë’s world.
